W.E.B. Dubois Outreach
On April 9th, the CCE sponsored a talk given by Amy Hillier PhD, Project Director of the Mapping W.E.B. DuBois Project, a project inspired by the The Philadelphia Negro that involves research, teaching, and outreach aimed at recreating the survey W.E.B. DuBois conducted in 1896.In her talk, Hillier expanded on the W.E.B. DuBois’ life, the Mapping Project, and other outreach the Mapping Project has developed, such as collaborating with Mural Arts to paint a mural on the South Street Firehouse.
Amy also gave the audience a sneak peak of the online GIS application (planned to launch this Spring!), which will allow current residents to search their residence online to see the demographics from 1896!At the end of the talk, open dialog with the audience gave the opportunity for all to share their own family history, roots, and connection to the Mapping Project.
